HIGH TEA LUNCHEON WITH GUEST SPEAKER, PROFESSOR TONY ATTWOOD

Redevents coordinated the inaugural Discovering Asperger’s presentation in 2013 to give the local community better access to resources and expert advice regarding Asperger’s Syndrome (AS), which can be scarce in regional areas. The day included a special guest presentation from world renowned Asperger’s expert, Professor Tony Attwood, who delivered advice on a range of topics to an audience of 260 – including strategies for families living with the syndrome.

The event was held at the Mackay Turf Club and included a high tea luncheon and a display from Resources at Hand, a provider of AS-related books, toys, games and other resources. A vintage-style theme in teal and white was used throughout to tie everything together and give it a consistent look that accentuated the topic and purpose of the event. This included the invitations, TV advertising, posters, email blasts and all decorations/communications used on the day.

While the overall purpose was to give Mackay parents, teachers and professionals a chance to learn from such a knowledgeable and energetic speaker on Asperger’s Syndrome, it also provided an opportunity for networking amongst guests and awareness for AS throughout the community.

The event generated a lot of positive feedback from guests, such as:

“Throughout our son’s ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) journey, I have attended many seminars and workshops, always having to travel on my own to Brisbane. The opportunity to attend ‘Discovering Asperger’s’ in Mackay was an amazing experience. Many parents, carers, teacher and professionals in our region are often not often able to attend when seminars are out of town. Mackay has a large ASD community, thanks redevents and Professor Tony Attwood for bringing such a wonderful presentation to Mackay!”

-Nicole Vloedmans, teacher aide with Autism Queensland

“Tony spoke with authority and conviction from several decades of clinical and academic practice. His key message was one of optimism, reflecting that many of the major advances in science and the arts had been made by people with Asperger’s. This was a must attend event for anyone involved in any way with the condition."

-Jeff and Sharon Stewart-Harris, parents of children with Aspergers
